From January 2009 Sheffield Community Transport will be changing the format of how MiDAS is trained. This is due to ever changing legislation in driving.
MiDAS (Minibus Drivers Awareness Scheme) is a nationwide scheme developed to enhance the driving and passenger awareness skills of individuals who drive minibuses in the course of their work or as a volunteer. Drivers have specific responsibilities to vulnerable passengers such as children or disabled people as well as a “duty of care” to take reasonable safety precautions when arranging and providing transport for all passengers.
Sheffield Community Transport now offers MiDAS for Car and MPV drivers. This is more suited to organisations that operate smaller vehicles (up to 8 passenger seats) either exclusively or as a larger fleet.
It follows the same accreditation procedure as MiDAS including classroom based theory training along with additional training for drivers who drive accessible vehicles (capable of carrying a wheelchair).
Additional training is available if you carry children with special needs or older people who require care or supervision. MiDAS Car & MPV provides the opportunity for organisations operating smaller vehicles, or voluntary car schemes, to deliver the same level of training to their drivers as MiDAS gives to minibus drivers, including regular refresher training. It follows the same modular format, providing drivers with the information they need to provide safe and comfortable transport for their passengers. There is additional training for those who may be driving accessible MPVs and passenger assistance training for those who may be transporting passengers with disabilities in saloon cars. There is also an on-road element, where drivers undertake an ‘Observed Drive’ during which they can demonstrate the skills learned in the classroom.
MiDAS Car & MPV recognises that some members may have drivers using their own vehicles and for this reason the organisation has the option to ‘opt out’ of the Observed Drive.
