Sheffield Community Transport - Community Car Scheme

The Community Car Scheme works with volunteers who have their own cars, They help transport people from all over Sheffield who have mobility difficulties and who have problems using public transport.

This service is suitable for a wide range of activities, including travel to lunch clubs, hospital visiting, adult education classes, shopping, leisure or simply visiting friends. A low mileage charge is made to cover costs.

Most journeys that are undertaken on the Car Scheme are fairly local, but we can undertake longer journeys if required e.g. holidays, visiting relatives etc.

Our volunteers help you to get to your destination in a calm and unhurried way and will usually help with coats, keys and even just a helping arm to steady you on your way. If you use a wheelchair and can transfer to a car seat we can usually carry your folded chair in the car.

Drivers are often willing to wait at some destinations but this does depend on the amount of time needed.

In order for us to find a volunteer driver in the right part of the city it is necessary to book a few days in advance. It is possible to make regular bookings on the Community Car Scheme providing the volunteer driver is willing to make that commitment.

The Car Scheme can take children on journeys to nurseries, playschemes and other activities as we recognise that some families under stress have difficulty using public transport, however we insist that children are escorted by an adult at all times.
