Could you be a volunteer for Sheffield Community Transport?
Volunteers find their time with Sheffield Community Transport (SCT) rewarding and enjoyable. Not only would you be putting something back into the community but could also gain nationally recognised qualifications FREE of charge.
Why do we need volunteers?
SCT provides transport for elderly and disabled people and a wide range of community groups in Sheffield. While we have paid drivers on some services we do rely heavily on the contribution of volunteers. People in Sheffield rely on the services that SCT provides to live full and active lives.
Why do people volunteer?
People volunteer for a great number of reasons, some are listed below:
- To become actively involved in the community.
- To build confidence and learn new skills.
- To gain vital work experience if wanting to return to paid employment.
- To repay support either they or a friend or relative have received from the community.
- To meet new friends.
Here's what one of our volunteers have said:
"I volunteer 2 days a week and now feel confident enough to start applying for paid employment. I know that taking people out in the minibus is helping them while making friends with my colleagues is helping me".
Skills and training required to volunteer.
For drivers only:
- Some skills will be essential, holding a full UK driving licence for one thing. Other skills we can help you develop such as communication skills.
- You must be over 21 years old.
For Drivers and Passenger Assistants:
- You must also be able to do the job with sensitivity and understanding. This is vital as you may be dealing with vulnerable people.
- We put all of our drivers through the nationally recognised MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme) and our passenger assistants through the PATS (Passenger Assistant Training Scheme) FREE of charge.
- You will be able to access a wide range of training courses including, Manual Handling, Ethical Awareness, First aid and Disability awareness.
What we ask of you:
- A willingness to help your community.
- 2 volunteer duties per month for the first 6 months you are with us (this helps towards the training costs that we pay to train you).
- Apart from the 2 duties for the first 6 months you are not committed to any volunteering activity. Simple work out when you are free and inform us, we will do the rest.
What will SCT give you?
As you will be volunteering your time you will receive no payment for work that you do for SCT. However you will be fully and promptly reimbursed for any out of pocket expenses you incur.
We also offer a wide range of nationally recognised qualifications and courses to suit your needs.
The confidence and skills to re-enter the work place should you wish to.
The chance to make new friends.
Volunteering will cost you nothing only your free time!
